My take on golf equipment is that all the top manufacturers produce quality clubs that perform great. My 3 personal criterias when investing in new equipment are:  

One, stay in the right category. Distance is OK but forgiveness and dispersion should be important determinates when making the decison to purchase.  

Two is getting the best value in that category. Not the lowest costing clubs or balls but the ones that perform the best according to your criteria.

Three, they need to feel and sound personally pleasing to you. The sound and feel of the clubhead, the feel of the shaft, the swing weight, grip feel, do you like lower or higher kick points, lower or higher torqued shafts

There is a lot of hype out there, but there are manufacturers offering value as well as fitters and testing websites that should be consulted. My favorites here are TXG, My Golf Spy, 2nd Swing. As you can see I fit and  use Wilson golf equipment
